Hopefully I didn’t screw that tag up.
Regarding Miyazaki and young characters, he’s always used them, going right back to Laputa and Totoro. In fact the oldest lead he’s ever used was in Howl’s Moving Castle!
I must admit when I saw Ponyo I didn’t pick up on the kingyo thing, as I didn’t know the word, but I did love the movie.
It’s also interesting if you compare the animation in Ponyo to the likes of Spirited Away and Howl though, – it’s an order of magnitude less advanced and expensive. Still charming, but very low-fi.
Hopefully we’ll see it being made available on BD before too long.
