  1. Kill la Kill bad? Yeah, no. It was a great show. And along with Attack on Titan, brought me back to anime where a decade of moe had killed my interest in it.

Also, it never ceases to amuse me how younger generations talk down Evangelion, completely ignoring how much of an impact it had in those mid to late 90s days.

  2. Space Dandy hate? Maybe i’ll actually download this episode after all!

I was totally put off by only Space Dandy being reviewed, because i thought it was one of the worst shows in years. Completely unfunny, with no redeeming qualities at all.

Kill la Kill was awesome though. Attack on Titan was good (although not *as* good as the hype proclaims), and Eva will forever hold a place in my heart as one of the first series i bought (VHS in the 90s!), along with Sakura Wars.

Only about half the new stuff has aired their first episodes so far, but i’ve already got my eye on a few. Apart from the obvious SAO2, Aldnoah.Zero looks promising, and Glasslip is a definite maybe, but my favourite so far is Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun. Reading the summary i thought it’d be average but the first episode had me laughing so much it jumped straight to the top of my list.

  3. @Sam: This was Red’s idea, to review something from the last season together, get everyone’s opinion on it, before the next round of previews. He happened to choose Space Dandy for this inaugural co-review. Sorry that we didn’t review anything else, but we’ll return to our usual programming next week.

And while you don’t like Space Dandy, the fact is that others may like it, so even if some people think its bad (including me) we have an obligation to review it because bad or not, it was probably the biggest most-hyped show from last season.

  4. First i like the format of reviewing one show together, it’s a nice change, and I actually enjoy listening to different sets of opinion on one show.

Secondly, the hype surrounding Space Dandy, was because it was directed by Shinichiro Watanabe, but the fact of the matter is, the show is so devisive, you either like it or hate it. Some people like it but personally I don’t, I think its average at best.

  5. Thanks for the support, Kourin. 🙂

I liked the co-review as well, I think doing one after each season is a good idea. Its fun to hear different opinions on the same thing, it highlights how different we are as individuals.

I think another thing that contributed to the Space Dandy hype was that it was fast-tracked to be aired on Toonami.

  6. I am strongly in the love camp for Space Dandy. Sam says it’s “Completely unfunny, with no redeeming qualities at all.” Funny, well that’s up to your taste, but no redeeming qualities? That’s hyperbole of the highest order? Even a hater of the show must agree that it’s magnificently animated.

I anticipate hearing what the arguments are against the show. I’ve heard some already (too perverted, and misrepresenting what anime is on US television) but I think that Space Dandy is about a dude who’s a loser and ogles women in a crappy theme restaurant, and never gets anywhere with the ladies. People are saying that the show is providing fan service, but I think the show is mocking people who want to see that kind of stuff. Those people are “Dandys.”

There’s actually not a lot of fan service content, anyway. The show goes off in so many directions, and it strays from showing off cleavage and butts quite a bit.

I’m not defending Dandy like every single episode was an A+ winner, but I love and laugh at Dandy so much, I wonder why people hate it.

  7. To the listeners who are unhappy about our Space Dandy review: remember, we are just like you. We are anime fans who watch and judge things based on our personal likes and dislikes. We try to give you guys a fair and balanced opinion, and you are free to listen to us or ignore us as you see fit.

While we did not give Space Dandy a high rating, we still tried to mention things we did like about it, and we acknowledged that while it wasn’t our thing that others out there probably would like it. At least we didn’t give it a Burn It.

  8. No hard feelings on my end guys. I got a laugh out of it personally, like, “Man, I just can’t win tonight!” Tastes are subjective and even I can look at Space Dandy and think, “This ain’t for everyone”.

I’d rather get an honest opinion on a show than a pandering one anyways, even if it’s not in line with my tastes. At least I know I can trust ya to be up front.

Furthermore you lot voice your opinion of a show without deriding the fans of it, which is something I can’t say for a certain other big name anime podcast.

  9. I felt that the Space Dandy review was fair; it wasn’t bashing. I enjoyed the series, but I went in with no expectations.

I like the idea of the shared review because I think it’s important for the hosts to have some shared viewing experience to facilitate discussion and comparisons. I think that re-reviews would be okay for this reason too, so long as they were not too close in episode count to the original review. Marathoning episodes puts all of the reviews a lot closer together.

Red, please, no spoilers! I listen to the podcast to enhance my enjoyment of anime, but spoilers reduce it. If I have warning, I can hum loudly to spare my ears, but spoilers like the major character death one in this episode cannot be anticipated by the listener. I’d seen that particular series, but there are so many more things out there that I’m yet to see that might be spoiled next. On a related note, the phrase “in the last episode” doesn’t belong in any review.

Keep up the good work! (Minus spoilers.)

  10. I always do my best to avoid spoilers, even with shows that have been out for years, because new viewers are always joining the otaku ranks and just because a show may have been around for a while doesn’t means everyone’s seen it yet. I think the longer he does the show, the better Red will get at that.

  11. I’ve finally listened to this, a few days after watching the screamingly funny season premiere of Dandy season 2.

I think that Space Dandy will go down in history as one of the funniest anime in history. Yeah, I’m taking that bet.

BTW, expecting that Space Dandy would be something like Cowboy Bebop is not the fault of Shinichiro Watanabe. That’s mostly on the viewer. It is called Space Dandy, after all.

This was a good idea (regardless of how the Dandy review made me itch) to have the show do a group review.

If you thought you didn’t like Dandy, then how will you fare in a group review against Knights of Sidonia, or Sword Art Online II?

  12. @YotaruVegeta:

I can tell you, I doubt we will do a group review of SAO II, since I have not even seen the first season, and have no interest in really watching it. I would rather we did something like the Sailor Moon reboot, as it seems to me to be the most hyped in the press.

  13. It’s mostly hyped because it’s an old favorite, not as much for the anime itself. It’s still good anyway. I wonder how many of the AP audience has watched it.
