  1. Congratulations Rio on your second episode as co-host. FamilyMart, a Japanese convenience store has a couple of branches here and they sell those Japanese Kit Kats. 😀

  2. Really?! That’s cool! I want to travel all around over the world someday. The most we have here is some pocky and pocky knock offs. (Unless you want to go to an Asian market and those can be hard to find!

  3. Yep yep! We also have this place called Japan Home Center with Japanese snacks and other home stuff, some items are Japanese-branded but made in China though. lol I guess i’ll try to post some photos in the Forums. “Melting Pot” section I guess?

  4. Yay! Ryowei!

One day, Red, you will have great ease at pronouncing Japanese words- or English words, like Steven.

I don’t get the hate for Scarlet Johannsen. I didn’t see the hate for her. I didn’t see Lucy, but I’ve seen her in a few films, and she’s a decent actor. No, she’s not even my 20th choice to play a Japanese cyborg, but I definitely understand why Hollywood would want her to play the role. She’s one of the most bankable female actors, especially when sci-fi action is concerned.

Again, I don’t know why she is called a “bitch” by Red. I don’t know how one would jump to that personal of an epithet when you’ve never met her. I remember that you explained that she comes off in a way that you don’t like, but I’ve never heard that she’s a stuck-up or mean individual.

  5. BTW, Scarlet Johannsen is reported to be about 120 lbs, at 5’4″

The major weighs A LOT more since she’s not made of flesh, but she appears to me to be of the same body type, especially if you are comparing the manga depiction or the Arise anime.

  6. I didn’t think the bitch comment was the best thing, my true anger is directed at Hollywood for this consistent white washing. She was good in the avengers but she plays a specific role time and time again. Avengers is the only time I’ve seen her spot on. She’s better as a side character. I’m pissed about this movie, but hopefully we can keep the discussion a bit more respectful from now on.

  7. Red’s a gentleman; there are worse words in the dictionary he could’ve used. 😉

I think Hollywood does need to get over their white safety net, but at least they’re putting their money on female leads. Female films that aren’t rom-coms are becoming in-vogue, and I’m happy about that.

I think we will all collectively groan when we hear Major Kusanagi’s Americanized name. Momo Kane or something terrible.

  8. Congrats Rio!
Please feel free to correct Red on his numerous mispronunciations.
Totally agree on how disappointing Trinity Seven ended up.

  9. Yeah… so let me tell you about the birds and bees, Red. See, there is this thing called puberty. And when that happens to boys, there is enlargement of larynx and deepening of the voice. So it’s very hard to find adult male voice actors to believably portray young boys. And as much as you would like to be an advocate for child labor, it’s hard to find talented child voice actors and to be able to schedule them for recordings without overburdening them. The realistic solution (in terms of time, money, and available talent pool) is for adult females to portray young boys.

  10. I mean, yeah, he can still not like the fact- and we can still disagree with him.

Maybe it’s better to be clueless sometimes, red. Maybe you should avoid reading what seiyuu plays the kids in anime, so you can just pretend that they’re all being played by boys. Yeah, that’s the ticket!

Maybe casting should be more like Barakamon, where they hired actual boy and girl actors to play the kids.

  11. What’s funny in this episode, Red, is that you reiterated your dislike for actors playing against gender, but you’re all about that trap, ’bout that trap (no chin-chin).
