This week on Anime Pulse, Joseph digs in with his IRL news talking about a new coworker, his fascination with arm cannons, and the weather. Andrew per his own confession, has nothing going on in his own life, so he goes straight into community stuff. Afterwards Joseph gives a big “eh” to a ranking of the geekiest states in America, and Andrew has some follow up news to an old piece about a canceled anime. Finally comes the previews, where Joseph talks about Fire Emblem Heroes: The Anime, Andrew rides a dragon wearing parts of a Jet, and the two of them swoon over an office romance.

  1. I don’t get Joey’s rejection of Shimoneta. It’s not like Highschool DxD, where there was a separate uncensored version. In fact, the whole concept of Shimoneta is a satire on censorship, so the show itself being censored kind of makes a statement about the current state of censorship. The point of Shimoneta is not to show boobs or butts. In fact, I don’t think there’s a lot of actual exposure in the series. Guys are more naked in the show than women.

  2. I guess you haven’t watched Gegege no Kitaro this season, Andy! The character has a famous attack called the “remote controlled geta” where he kicks off his shoes and it goes flying at an evil spirit.

Maeden Marchen got cancelled? I guess I’m revealing just how far I got into the show. That’s a shocker. The last time this happened was for Gangsta. (Don’t forget the period!) That cancellation was for a sadder reason, because the studio went defunct.

I’m no longer surprised that New York is a less geeky state than the midwest or south. In a state where you have more to do, you might be less likely to watch anime. That’s my wild guess, anyway. Kids in the middle of the state do a lot of weird stuff out of boredom.

  3. I know this is not a statement that most people want to hear, but let’s face it: HS-DxD is a victim of today’s Postmodern version of Puritanism, as embodied by SJW’s. We can lay the blame on Crunchyroll and Funimation, but only as far as their caving to leftist busy-bodies who happen to be too easily offended by the depiction of female bodies in pop culture, or anything else they deem as politically incorrect. The media companies are running and ducking for cover lest the acolytes and priests of the Church of Social Justice bring havoc on their heads. It’s not your bible-thumping politician’s wife (ala’ Tipper Gore) any longer, but your neck-beard feminist white knight soy boy objecting to such material. We are seeing this everywhere, throughout the various media and the Internet. Free Speech is under attack, and all in the name of a small but loud minority comprised of cry bullies.
Sorry, I had to get that off my chest. If I stepped on any toes, feel free to respond, but this is my opinion. Rant over.

    1. Maybe I know the wrong SJWs, or I mostly am familiar with sex-positive, porn-positive ones, who I don’t usually see beating down the doors and saying NO MORE BEWBS EVER B/C OBJECTIFICATION, but rather encouraging an overall healthier attitude towards sex, nudity, sex work, etc.. So I’m not seeing what you’re seeing here as the instigator of modern censorship.

I’d be more inclined to think that companies licensing and distributing are maybe worried about the (under)age range of their consumers – anime still skews young! – and reigning in the nudity, which is still pretty culturally taboo here, lest parents complain and wring their hands over some nipples (even though there’s probably a bunch of violence in there but wtf ever I guess!). Maybe they could get sued for corrupting minors or somesuch otherwise. That’s my take, anyway.

    2. UGH
Yeah, because censorship didn’t cone into being until the 2010s

What is this, “Political Pundits Tonight”? You’ve been on the internet, right? EVERYONE is butthurt. The people who decided to start calling people snowflakes are now quite flakey.

There are times when there is no better conclusion than to blame oversensitivity run amok; but, in my experience, anime being censored has way more to do with dollars than politics. Censorship allows for a larger viewership, and it allows companies to suck money out if people so into the product that they will watch the whole show, then buy it

It’s easy to finger point, especially in this day and age, but I tend to see it at an angle having less to do with politics

  4. That’s fair, Blonde; you are obviously looking at one part of the proverbial elephant while I am describing another. But I say to everyone, ask yourself why all of a sudden, in recent months, the censorship has increased and become more prevalent in the news. Family and family-oriented concerns by parents for the innocence of their underage children have always been with us, and arguably are even justified. Thus companies have had that as a consideration for quite some time. BUT what has changed is that the latest spate of calls putting pressure on the media companies is due to the afore-mentioned new “religion”. Just this week we are hearing that Steam is putting extensive restrictions on Ecchi Anime games, when we already have age restrictions for the games they sell. This is NOT coming from Christians or other (actual) religious people, whom these media companies tend to ignore anyway. No, this is coming from the opposite direction.
Look, as I said, I know not everyone wants to hear these reports, but it is happening. And I apologize for myself for coming off a bit abrasive in this statement above. Admittedly I have been upset about having to cancel my trip to Origins next month due to a bunch of internet activists hounding their chairman into dropping a guest of honor whom these leftists found offensive, needlessly so, and for whom their charges are 100% non-factual and made up. There have been a slew of other incidents where people are being doxed or harrassed, companies put under undue pressure to silence or suppress people and works of art, and conventions bullied into capitulating to a vocal minority. All of these sqeeky wheels have a desire to suppress Free Speech as their objective, I suggest that people valuing the First Amendment and expressions of Free Speech look up and pay attention to what is happening today.

    1. HAS censorship increased? I actually don’t know. To make that statement, you would need evidence to corroborate that accusation.

I remember when 4Kids did all sorts of nonsense to kids anime. Today, I can go on CR and watch an uncensored version of My Wife is Student Council President (I think that’s the title) or Terrorformars. In Amazon, Ican get Killing Bites as it was meant to be seen.
If Censorship has increased, I would bow to that knowledge, because I haven’t read anything that leads me to believe such a trend.

      1. My understanding is that Valve has only backed off from the two-week deadline for developers to comply with their new policy, that each of these products would instead be placed under further review, BUT the new policy still stands, just the same. So, as one dev commented, they’re “not out of the woods yet”.

My point/rant is that these current demands for censorship have little to do with protecting the innocence of children, unlike previous efforts, but rather has to do with controlling what and how _adults_ think, And you’re right that it is the threat to the bottom line that motivates these companies to comply with such demands, but the pressure comes from this new breed of activist zealots on the Left, not the usual suspects of yesteryear, such as the Religious Right. Economics is certainly a factor, but Politcs is driving this, like it or not.
