Episode 591: Winter 2019 Previews #4

Is the voice acting industry jumping on that #MeToo movement a year late? It could very well be! To help you sort this out is your top analysts Joseph and Andrew, who talk about tax refunds and having our resident Southern Belle read off her comments. There’s also a surprise visit from Ryo, host of After Dark, who drops by to give her two cents about the allegations behind RWBY voice actor Victor Mignogna. And finally we wrap the show up with our final previews episode, Andrew interviews magical girls who enter retirement but suffer from PTSD and Joseph shows us how a shield can be a weapon.

  1. Thanks for having a pretty chill and balanced take on the Vic Mignogna mess. Been trying to discuss the matter with some friends, but they’re hard anti-Vic and see any doubt about the allegations or questioning as harmful and “problematic”, so hearing a more measured take on things was really refreshing. I’m not really sure where I stand on the matter myself. I think it’s pretty well established at this point that Vic just plain sucks at detecting personal boundaries, but what that’s actually lead to I don’t know.

    -Crooh

P.S. Andrew, Dororo *is* actually a girl, which is why she looks and sounds like one. The rare reverse trap character.

  2. Two poinst about the whole Vic debacle. First, like Midnight Crooh said, this was a very fair conversation. Whether it’s in an actual court or the court of public opinin, people should be presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Second, I had an issue with what you said, Mr. Chan (we’re talking about serious stuff, so I thought that’s appropriate) : You said “Why didn’t any of the people who were allegedy bad touched by Vic say something to him, or say something about it” Paraphrased, of course. I don’t think that’s victim blaming, but why is it the woman’s (or girl’s, since we’re talking anime fans) duty to correct his behavior? It’s not a 1:1 comparison, but if someone punched you in the face randomly, is it your place to teach this lovely individual that they were in error? Maybe you’re in shock, you know? Maybe you’re in public and you don’t want to make a scene. Or maybe you’re, I don’t know, an anime geek and you’re awkward to begin with. “Somebody should’ve said something” is a common retort in these cases, but it’s often not the case that people come forward with accusations. When someone has a bad experience at a restaurant, do they consistently bring their grievances to the staff?

ANYHOO, enough serious stuff. I liked your Spec Ops: The Line reference, Andy. That made me smile. Magical Girl Asuka reminds me of CSI Miami. We all know that famous meme with Davidd Caruso taking off his glasses and making bad puns with a serious face.

During the Shield Hero discussion, I was sweating because I thought Ol Loose Lips Joey was going to just give away the whole plot. This is the burden that anime-first viewers have, because manga-first viewers tend to have a need to just retell an entire plot, whether they’re asked to or not.

Also, Dororo rocks. Gotta watch more of that.

Tekata (or however you spell it) is a show I’ve never heard of, either. Before Madoka, the only thing resembling a dark magical girl show was Kaleido Star. I hope I got that name right. If you’ve seen a kid riding a star creature, that’s the one. It’s more like dark Pokemon than dark Sailor Moon.

  3. Yup, like YotaruVegeta said, reactions to sudden inappropriate touching etc. vary widely and can often veer into awkward silence, especially if you’re in a public situation where saying “WTF HANDS OFF ASSHOLE” isn’t the first thing you think to do. Besides that, there’s a power dynamic here for certain – a very popular VA (probably one you really admire!) oversteps a boundary and you might be less inclined to slap him off you than a rando grabbing at you on the street.

This article details more serious allegations than just being handsy at con signings: https://io9.gizmodo.com/one-of-anime-s-biggest-voices-accused-of-sexual-harassm-1832390505?rev=1550606147397&utm_medium=socialflow&utm_source=io9_twitter&utm_campaign=socialflow_io9_twitter&__twitter_impression=true
Many in the con circuits seem to have at least known Mignogna as having “a reputation” and I know one person who was actively warned to stay away from him due to said rep. 🙁

Thanks to Ryo for guest commentary too!
