Episode 602: Spring 2019 Previews #2

This week on Anime Pulse the crew talks about anime being used in politics, going on a cleaning spree, and more anime from the spring 2019 season. First up is IRL news with Joseph being alone at home for a week and five days, and Andrew gets into community asking about what anime we have backlogged. Then with industry news, we got topics like an Anti-Moe animation talking down on anime and Kizuna Ai making it into the big leagues of most respected people in the world. And finally the previews wrap things up, as Joseph picks up some harems and Andrew puts on some slightly off color rose tinted glasses.

  1. Well Andy sadly the UK has Sweden well trumped in terms of sensitivity. Your country’s nanny state-ery and thinskinnedness is in a category of its own. It’s like a very vocal minority of your politicians somehow managed to totally avoid learning anything about how the internet works and internet culture. At least there seems to be some political initiatives brewing by people who think the stupidity has gone on for long enough. I shall observe the happenings from here across the pond and hope for the best.

  2. Andy, why have you never watched a Captain America movie? Is it because you hate America? [SOB!] Or is it the Superman effect, where a character is just too square-jawed and perfect, so it’s not something that you’re attracted to. The first Cap movie absolutely had that corny, hoo-rah America vibe. When he ends up in current times- and when the Russo brothers started directing- that’s when it got way more interesting. Out of the 3 movies, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is the best. It’s action-packed, and Cap has an antagonist who can go toe-to-toe with him.

Wait, did you say that you hadn’t heard of Jormungand? Or maybe you were reading a forum post and I got confused? In any case, there was an Anime Pulse host who talked about Jormungand a few times. I don’t know if you remember him. He went by the screen name RedUnit10.

Do you think the whole Vic debacle ends with Vic getting a massive apology from the companies who dropped him?

Damn, my comments are all about Andy this episode. You made a point about not wanting politics to be involved in your anime. Well, some would argue that all entertainment is inherently political. I know what you’re saying. You don’t want a character to start talking about feminism, Brexit, or Don Trump. Doesn’t every anime have a certain point of view, though? Even a “dumb” anime, like a harem anime. Most anime don’t make blunt political statements, but what an anime doesn’t include tells you about what they believe you’ll be comfortable with.

No, I don’t want Goku to turn to the camera and tell me about the merits of the GOP for 22 minutes, but I feel like people have gotten high strung about any mention of politics whatsoever. Going back to Avengers Engdame, there’s a moment where a certain group of characters are all gathered together in a blatant moment. It’s less than a minute in a 3 hour movie, and there are people who have LOST THEIR MINDS about it. I’m sorry, but I believe that there’s no escaping politics in fiction, because I think every creator has something to say. Back to my harem point: a harem show is saying “Heterosexual men, even at their blandest, deserve to be worshiped by gorgeous female” Am I lying?
