Hey all! Id like to see what non anime hobbies you guys have! I like to knit, crochet, and write stories. I watch non anime shows as well. Mostly ghost shows, house flipping, and food shows. So what do you all like to do other than watch anime, read manga, and play video games?

I sculpt, but I need to build myself a decent table to actually continue artistry. And I dunno if it counts as a hobby, however, I have been trying to improve the house that my wife and I currently live in.

That's pretty cool. What kinda things do you sculpt and what materials do you like working with?

Yeah I'd count the latter as a hobby as well. A good'ol project to have in the background

My current hobbies mostly involve writing reviews, illustration and storyboarding.

I use Super Sculpey, it's better than using clay. Infinitely less messy, and it doesn't dry out until you bake it! I've sculped a character of mine for a story I created for a class, he is a fat gnome who treasure hunts. ( https://pwnart.wordpress.com/gallery/ ) I definitely want to do more, but I don't have a table to work on.
The owners of the house let a company rent it out, and they didn't do half of what they were supposed to do to fix it up, and they are getting annoyed with how much we ask them to fix, even though we only ask to fix things we can't do ourselves.
Noice on the illustration and storyboarding! I do that myself (even got a b.a. in art) but I've been doing it way less as of late.
What kind of stories have you worked with? Anything published?

Very nice! Yeah the sculpting looks very professional and I also like some of your sketches and illustrative work.

Oh dear that does sound like quite an ideal considering you're not dealing with the owner directly. To an extent I understand how that having rented in the past. Hopefully it all gets sorted.

Well in terms of illustration those have either been for when I was studying or for the jobs I've worked, most of it has been assets for games. So I'd maybe count the board games I've worked on to be as close to 'published' as I've gotten. The storyboarding for work has usually been for making video projects such as tutorial videos, ads or documentaries (not particularly interesting stuff I know). If you're thinking more fictional stories the most complete one I did was a short story about a kid who meets an alien and travels to space. B'yeah it's just something I like doing and want to get better at.

How did you end up doing assets and such for games? That sounds like something I would be interested in. I tried getting hired for a kickstarter game called Darwin's Island, or some such, but they were looking for something more graphic arts and I'm too illustrative.
Did you ever take classes for illustration or story creation?

What I would say is apply for as broad a range of positions as your skillset can stretch, in my example the company I went with made boardgames specifically tailored for healthcare workers, not necessarily where I wanted to stay but it was a paying job with useful experience. I expected to be coding and mostly be designing games but the short staffing meant that I also had to make a lot of the artwork and doing other odd jobs like video editing. So to be honest I applied without initially intending to do illustrations. What I did to get in was the usual: CV, folio and cover letter. I'd recommend doing this to company's that don't even say they're hiring. I'm not sure how much of this is helpful and I hope I don't come off preechy.

As for the second question yes. While it was not my main degree I took on storyboarding and animatic classes from Pixar director Mark Andrews. My illustrations are self taught though.

Boardgames for healthcare workers? Anything like Pandemic? And trust me, it doesn't come off as preachy when I'm asking for advice/help! So it pretty much comes down to portfolio (as I've been told in my classes) which I desperately need to work on. That's awesome that you are self taught in illustration, do you have any of your work posted anywhere that I can see?

That's also pretty awesome being taught by a pixar director! I had the opportunity to be taught by a couple teachers that have done plenty of field work, and had lots of life experiences to impart.
Do you have any suggestions for doing animatics? I did one for a class, and it was pretty fun!

I've starting playing the guitar recently. Other than that working on my computer, both hardware and software, takes up most of my free time. I do try to read whenever I get the chance.

Hobbies.... Is that a thing you do when you aren't working?

Aside from the expected anime/video games because why else would I be here.

Reading is hard. After spending so much time studying manuals the last few years I find it hard to pick up recreational books. I have read a few but it's tough to stay focused.

I am starting to push more time into fitness. Aside from barebones fitness standards, been working on actually following some fitness programs. Especially with lifting. I remember Red used to lift back in the day, but clearly those are long gone. Following a weekly program for weights takes a while to become routine but I do miss it when I have to skip a day now. Along with the fitness, I've had to cut back on my brewery discovery since apparently i'm old now. Have swapped that for more liquor, especially bourbon. I love bourbon now. Would LIKE to make cocktails, but Jesus I don't have the time or patience to buy all the mixing ingredients.
