I can only think of one, although I am certain there are others if I think a little longer. I first became a big fan of anime when I saw Macross/Robotech waaaay back when. Also like Battle Tech the tabletop RPG as well. But years later I kind of fell out with the genre of giant mecha. I tried to get into the Macross Plus and other subsequent series, and just got quickly bored.
And the Gundam craze never grabbed me as a result either. It is not like I do not like mecha anime, quite the contrary. But few giant robo series ever grabbed me since. (I can blame it upon learning too much about actual robotics in college.)

However, I did enjoy the SSSS.Gridman series recently, as it either avoided a lot of the bad tropes or hung a lamp-shade on them. My taste in media has matured to where I appreciate good characters and story lines. The tech is just the icing on the cake.

The first anime that came to mind for me is Fushigi Yuugi. I watched this anime in the very early years of my anime fandom and I remember really liking that series. During that time I was watching anything I could get my hands on. However as my tastes in anime matured; I started getting bored with certain anime tropes and unfortunately this series fell into that category. Fushigi Yuugi is just a reverse shojo harem anime. I tried rewatching it a few years ago (yes I still own the DVDs lol) but it is tough to get thru. The main character "Miaka is just so whiny and annoying but all the male characters love her. I just don't have the patients for annoying characters anymore either. I will say Fushigi Yuugi is a very pretty anime. For a shojo series that came out in the late 90's; the production design is amazing.

Sword Art Online, now that you mention, uh, GIF it. The most recent punching bag of the anime community, and not without reason.

Kirito manages to be winning whether he's in the real world or the virtual world. He's OP, he finds a waifu in the virtual world (Who is also hot and NOT a man in reality; how is this based on actual MMOs?) and his cousin also has the hots for him later on.

Look: if you like anime, the odds are good that you either like an OP character, or you like an idealized version of a human being. My issue isn't really the OP status of Kirito. I think that him having plot armor is dumb, and Asuna going from capable fighter when we meet her to a tentacle-molested damsel. THEN we learn a great lesson when we get to Gun Gale: bring a not-lightsaber to a gun fight. Come on.

I don't know what happened after Gun Gale, and I probably will never. It looked like happy times. They were actually playing the game for fun, rather than survival.
