If ya wanna make your own podcast, here's what ya do:
1. Find a theme for your podcast (preferably somethin' that hasn't been done already)
2. Get a paypal account
3. Buy a libsyn account (www.libsyn.com)
4. Download Audacity
5. Download the LAME mp3 encoder from the same place you get Audacity
5. Buy a decent microphone and headphones
6. Use Audacity to record your episode
7. Edit your episode
8. Export your episode as an mp3 file and edit the tags using either the option in audacity or by using the "get info" button in itunes
8. Log onto libsyn
9. Click the "media files" tab
10. Upload your MP3 file to the server
11. Click the publish tag
12. Write your show notes
13. Tell your friends!
---------------------------------------------------------
Some misc. tips:
-Don't make a promo until you have at least 10 GOOD episodes out
-Once you get the hang of recording, get Soundforge, Audition, or ACID pro.
-Edit all vocal fillers (ah's and um's) out along with dead air (unnecessary silence)
-Enunciate Your Words (pronounce ure god damn words clearly, in short)
-Unless you're extremely popular (like Anime Pulse or Anime World Order) keep your episodes below 30 minutes in length. Long podcasts scare away potential listeners. If you can't remove content, then split your episode into parts and publish them separately
-Get a Co-Host if you can. It adds some life to your podcast.
-Rant on! People love it.
-Use the amplify option to increase your audio quality if you need to
-Make sure background music doesn't interfere with people hearing you
-Make intro music short. (No offence Paltir, but 4 min long opening music is a no no.)
-When recording over Skype, use the multiple-source trick. In otherwords, have each person in the conversation record from their computer and then send each recording to the editor. The editor then synchronizes the tracks for consistent sound quality all-around.
If ya have questions or stuff you'd like me to add, feel free to PM me. |

For Free Podcasting or Some What Free Podcasting
Put Podcast on iTunes
1: make a Wordpress account ( http://wordpress.com/ )
2: Find out feed url by going to your View and looking at Page Source. Your feed url will all way be http://what your site is call.wordpress.com/feed/. Copy that url and go over to Feedburner ( http://www.feedburner.com/fb/a/home )
3: Feedburner will make your feed into a feed that will work with iTunes + any podcasting site.

Sitting Up Audacity
1: download Audacity like One_Sin said.
2:Now open Audacity and hit Ctrl+P to open up preferences
3: Now that you're in preferences hit Quality as seen in the pic
4: Now put Default Sample Fomat to 16-bit. as soon as you're done hit on the File Formats and set it to Wav (microsoft 16 bit PCM)
5: Now hit ok and you're done. Now you're ready to rec a podcast.

for better quality sound, if you have a less than quality mic get one of those things that you put in front of your mic to eliminate all the PAH and TUH and SSS sound that we all make when we talk
i cant find a link but you can make one out of panty hose

Did you REALLY? just give ME? advice onesin? REALLY? So my intro's are too long, but your sorry ass voice is ok? Someone explain that to me, please? I think most would rather be able to understand the podcaster, than have short intros....
On another note, This is a good idea. Though we should encourage people to podcast, we should also make them realize you can't just podcast and it'll be popular. I guess I'll contribute here.
Paltir's Tips on not sucking ass for podcasters:
1. Use half decent equipment (I've spent $30 dollars on a mic that records just as good as expensive ones, money isn't always the anwser.)
2. For your theme, it's gotta be, well, different. I'll explain.
Why would someone listen to you if your the same as another, better podcast? For example. If I tried making an anime podcast, but all I do is news and reviews, why would anyone listen? What makes it different? Anime-Genesis, AP, AWO, etc. all have large established fan bases and much more expirence than you could do by yourself or your "expert" friend. So what I mean is...
a. Stand out above the crowd (even if you gotta shout out loud)
(+10 points for recognizing that) Continuing our anime news/reviews theme, what makes you different? Do you work in the industry? Are you a voice actor? Have you produced anime in the past? Is your friend one of the above? No? Then forget it. Are you a real comedian, or is your friend? (Note: just because you think your funny doesn't mean you are, trust me on that one). Does your friend think anime is just cartoons, and Is willing to give a non-fan viewpoint. Do you or your friend prefer dubs over subs? See where I'm getting at? If your not different, why would anyone listen to you over an established podcast which is already proved to be good. Goes for all types.
b. If you decide to do a podcast about say nothing in particular. Have themes, your not Seinfeld, you can't get away with a show about nothing. Do a TV day, or a rant day or something like that. Segments that stay consistant like a "What I hate about Popular TV shows" and pick a new one each week, even if one week is about tabletop gaming, and the next week is about sports. It's a good way to keep people interested in your podcast, especially if they like your segment. They will listen each time to hear it, and maybe begin to enjoy the whole podcast.
c. If you decide to do one anyway, baring the above advise, don't be surprised if people don't come flocking to your "awsome" podcast. Don't go whining and bitching to people on forums if you don't have any listners. It's a fact of life. Only the strong or very rich survive. Same in podcasting. If you suck, but have lots of money, yeah, you can buy yourself publicity. But if you suck, and don't wanna sink anything into it, well, your screwed.
3. Emotion is KEY!
People listen to be informed or to be entertained. I listen to NPR sometimes because they have lots of news and interesting viewpoints, and it's not bogged down my sappy feelings and shiggity like the local news. Are they monotone alot? YES! They could totally put a baby to sleep, but It doesn't bother me when they are giving me good info. That's key, know your audience.
Don't do the whole show in a slow monotone voice when you know people don't come to you for insider information. News is ok to not really try, especially if it's new, but dont' put them to sleep. If your excited about something, show it. That's what all entertainment does, it evokes emotion. Your excited, so you wanna get your audience excited. Same with something sad, angry, etc.
Ok. I'm run out for now, but i'll get back to it later on if i think of more. _________________

I will admit episode five was a total disaster. But hell, I had alot of people on. Who have you had on YOUR show? You made up a fictional podcast... yeah, REALLY cool and totally origional. Hmmmm, who did that a few months ago... I wonder. That and We have to listen to your voice. I am the first to admit my podcast sucks, but I draw the line when you think yours is better. _________________

and just remember, children, FTP is your best friend if you are podcasting.
oh, and just incase anyone out there is using the new version of Audacity, drop it like a hot rock, cause that thing deleted a whole episode on me and crashes like all the time. use the old version. _________________ This has been cleared out by Ichigo. Um, I have a question. About music and podcasts, if you used fan made MIDI files of songs (like Ready Steady Go, and other themes from anime or games) would that be legal?? Because they aren't the actual song and all?? _________________

IIRC, any song that is under copyright is protected regardless of its form, be it in a remix or otherwise. So it would be safe to say that it's not legal.
Copyright isn't something most new podcasters have to deal with, though. The RIAA has bigger fish to fry. |
