Some might recommend Legend of the Galactic Heroes. I'm not one of them.
I do recommend the Crest/Banner of the Stars series. It's a Space Opera, and very much character oriented. |

Legend of [the] Galactic Heroes is excellent, but it's also a time-sink. CaButler03's not the only person I've heard dislike it, its not one of those shows that appeals to everyone. I recommend it if you have a lot of time on your hands, as well as a flowchart to track plots, subplots, and characters. Otherwise it can be daunting.
If you're looking for something more action oriented, then you can't go wrong with the Macross saga or Outlaw Star. The Irresponsible Captain Tylor is excellent if you want a light comedy with a little action spattered around. Of course the classics Captain Harlock and Galaxy Express 999 should also be mentioned.
