Do you consider yourself to be an otaku? What does the term mean to you? Really up in the air how you choose to answer this one but I'm interested to see.

Re: AP 621 - Otaku
Otaku is not a favorable term among most native citizens in Japan, at least with regards the mainstream, "normie" or "polite" part of its culture. In fact, like nerds or geeks or other counter-culture subgroups in a given society, they are frowned upon. But then again, there's nothing wrong with a person being who they are, and if others have problem with that, then its something one or both sides has to simply put up with.
Do I think of myself as an otaku? I guess. Better an otaku rather than a weeb, of course. LOL.

Rampant ai has an important point. Otaku is not a great term in Japan. We see that truth in Oreimo (Red I'm still pissed you ruined that for me you bastard). Otaku is an insult. That being said would I be considered an otaku in Japan. Oh FUCK yeah. Video games, anime, manga, I love all of it and being back in Hellsing Hell it's half of what I talk about. I'm an otaku through and through, but I don't really use the word? It's true but I don't use it. I call myself a weeb as a joke cause around here that's what most people use. I don't take those words seriously tbh. If I took anything with an ounce of sincerity it would probably be Fujoshi. Awful sexist term, but it's true. Gimme that gay stuff k thanks.

That's an interesting question, because I usually don't feel like one. There are certainly a lot of people who are way more into their anime fandom than I am. Then I look around and realize that I do own a LOT of manga, as well as a bunch of anime figures. So I... guess I am? Just not one who obviously looks like it or who shouts his fandom to the skies. Like, I think I own a single article of clothing with something anime-related on it. Otherwise I just look like some generally artsy dude.

According to MAL, I've watched 354 anime, but I don't consider my self to be an Otaku because I have no interest in almost all of the other parts of the culture. While I was planning my trio to Japan, I found myself pushing Akihabara down my priorities list. I ended up going there, but mainly to buy souvenirs for my friends who are into anime. Frankly though, I don't care if I'm labeled as an Otaku. I just don't take it as an insult. It also helps that most of my friends have watched anime at least for few times.
