This weeks question I call the "Question of Embarrassment".

With Anime and Manga comes a stigma of being treated like an Otaku (Japan) or a Weirdo (North America). Its a sad fate, but some of us wear it with pride and shout to the world "I love Anime!"

But how open are you with your affection for Anime? Do you hide it away even among your friends, or do you perhaps walk around wearing cats ears and end all your sentences in Desu~.

Myself; I am relatively open with my admiration and activities in the Anime world. While I don't walk around wearing a Naruto headband or decorate my schoolbag with Anime buttons, if I am asked about my interests I will list Anime and Manga among them and even explain what they are to those who ask. If that changes how someone views me thats their problem, everyone has unique interests and I think Anime is one of the more tame and cultured ones.

Same here. I am like that with all my nerdy interest. I draw manga style, and I make it no secret that I am working an american manga (avoiding as many cliches as possible). Pending title is Helix

I tend to only mention I'm an Anime Otaku to a close circle of associates who are already Anime fans themselves. Living in the UK, Anime still has this reputation of being "those weird Japanese porno cartoons" to an extent, no thanks to right wing newspapers which hate anything that isn't simply tea, biscuits, the Queen, White and British. Although I do blame Urotsukidoji, to an extent, for being released here during the dark ages (i.e. the late eighties/early nineties) and causing that amount of damage. But I digress.

Having said that, there seems to be a surprisingly large number of colleagues at work who have heard of and seen some Anime and Manga. And I do listen to the odd bit of music associated with Japanese Pop culture and several anime podcasts, including the one this forum is about, in the car and in public.

Until the day this country grows out of the mindset of "cartoons are for kids", however, I think I'll will be careful about mentioning my particular interests unless I know for sure that people will not simply think it's those "Japanese Porn Cartoons with octopuses/squids..."

I think that like a lot of the people here I'm not going to go out screaming anime quotes and stuff like that, I'm not going to hide that I enjoy anime. Most of the people who get to actually know me will know that I am into anime and other such "nerdy" things. But then again, I'm willing to talk endlessly about topics that interest me from anime, to sci-fi to fantasy, to what have you.

So I guess I don't hide it but I'm not going to go out of my way to bring it up.

As for any people not getting anime, most of the people I know understand that anime isn't either just for kids or all hentai so I don't have to worry about any stigma.

i never bring it up, and i dont make it obvious that im an anime fan, but if it comes up i wont pretend i dont know anything about it. i have a bunch of friends who like anime, and another bunch who dont like it and think its weird. its never a problem, and i have a good time making fun of anime with them, because if you cant poke fun at your hobbies i think you are probably taking things too seriously.

I've never hidden my love for anime, and I've always been eager to talk to people about it and show them that it's more than just kids cartoons or ultra-violent weird animated porn.

Personally Aniome is my things. I only mention it people are intersted or I say that Iam got really into japanese literature and TV while I lived there for two years and I will expound upon anime and manfga if I get the chance. However Iam not running around screaming it as I think anime is my thing and it's personal to me because it is my escape.

I personally wear it with pride. It may be a little embarrassing at times but I can't help but feel a sense of pride in being an otaku

I'm fairly open with my love for things Japan and anime. However since there is a stigma I'm not going to be wearing things like cat ears. I wear character t-shirts, I listen to j-pop/j-rock whenever I feel like. As Ray-Avalon said it can be embarrassing but honestly we love anime for a reason and I'm fine with being an otaku.

I am somewhat open with my affection for anime. But I wouldn't MARRY it like a piece of old news mentioned on the show in an earlier episode.

I'm about the same as most people here. I wear clothing with anime characters on it, listen to j-pop, j-rock and music from various anime, I own a pair of cat ears and have made cosplay costumes...but I don't wear either of the latter outside on cons. I'm willing to talk about it or explain it to others but I don't usually bring it up unless it has to deal with the current conversation. My husband, siblings, and most of my close friends are into anime/manga so it comes up a lot with them.

I don't hide my love for anime or manga. If people ask if I watch it of course I'm not gonna lie about it, but its not something that I easily give out. Though that question usually gets asked because I wear a Kerero Gunso wristband. (KERERO FOREVER!!) Though the one thing that does REALLY tick me off is that people (usually my parents) ask me (when I state my love for the mediums) when I'm going to grow up. But thats a different topic entirely. I quote certain things from anime from time to time like the "Unlimited Bladeworks" chant and "ORE WO DARE TO OMOTTE YAGARU!!" I listen to quite a bit of music from anime, not just the openings but the OST's and recently have tried to acquire the Yu Yu Hakusho soundtracks only to find that the songs I do want have never been released. RAGE!! I should stop myself here :)
Adios for now.

After I joined the Air Force I've noticed that there is a heavy stigma with otaku antics being that the military tends to draw the alpha male personality. I tell them i watch anime and that's fine. They think Cowboy Bebop, Trigun and anything else shown on adult swim in the early 2000's is cool.

I just leave out that i'm a huge shojo/harem fan. :D

I am proud to show my love of anime, the same way I am proud to show my patriotism for Canada (my home country). I would fall under the category of the person who would walk around with the cat ears and tail but I don't have the money to buy a set of said items.
