AP 608 - Genre Subversion

Post by VicMonado »

Looking at genre it's pretty easy to know what to expect but what about anime that purposely dissects or subverts what we know about the genre. Today let's talk about some of those with some key examples and why they did or did not work. A little bit more substantive a topic than usual so I'm interested to hear what you submit.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica. Pretty much deconstructs and subverts the magical girl genre. For one the main character does not get her power in the 1st episode, and give a darker take on the use of their powers and how their magic doesn't give them as much protection as they think it does. The show best deconstructs the power of heart and does this by drawing attention to the fact that the power of what the girls wish for are not as pure and noble as many shows often assume they would be and tragedy ensues because of it.
Don't get left, just get on your good foot.

The topic GIF was an immediate one that came to mind, Puella Magi Madoka Magica. In a similar vein but taking it in a different direction is
Mahō Shōjo Ikusei Keikaku or Magical Girl Raising Project, which takes the subverted magical girl semi-trop-e and turns it into a Battle Royale.

It seems trite at first but manages to blend the usual dramatic action of both the Madoka subverted kid-show and death match tropes.

And then there is another take on the subverted maigical girl trope in Yūki Yūna wa Yūsha de Aru (Yuki Yona Is a Hero), where the very use of their magical power becomes the source of a double-edged curse, and thus to use their power for good carries too high of a cost.

These are certainly NOT kid's shows, but subversions thereof, and for that reason the only reason I would have given them a view.
Wherever you go... there you are.

For me, I enjoy the hell out of Gintama because it is not only a Shounen anime, but it also takes several shots at shounen shows and anime in general.

Gintoki and crew break the fourth wall a lot, and that's how the show has stayed relevant after many years.

Back Street Boys is definitely not your typical idol show.
