While I enjoy fun irredeemable poopoodoodoo head villains as much as the next guy, the other side of the coin are antagonists that are written in a way in which you can sympathise or even feel bad for them even. Name some of your top examples in anime and why.

Re: AP 766 - Sympathy for the Villain
Got to go with the classic Char Aznable or Casval Rem Deikun, besides being the first Gundam villain that every subsequent series antagonist or anti-hero would be modeled after. it's not hard to see why you would want to root for him considering his father a philosopher and philanthropist was killed in an attempt to serve as a martyr and not too long after an attempt on his mother sister and his own life, and see that he gets his revenge on the family who made it happen. He's good looking is suave, debonair, charming, and wants to see the good out of humanity. However his way of forcing that upon them is by either nuking the planet or forcing them into very consequential battling engagements to try and overcome their flaws. His quote: "humans simply pollute Earth because their souls are weighed down by gravity"sees how humans are letting nature in the planet go to the wayside and that they should go into space, however he's willing to use anything and anyone to accomplish that.
Don't get left, just get on your good foot.
