Popcorn Pulse 253: Sidney’s Sweeties

You know we here at Popcorn Pulse like to be topical, like an ointment. You might attribute our successes to the placebo effect more than the listed ingredients. Also like a topical application, we might leave you feeling greasy. Because we’re going to talk about Sidney Sweeney. We have a movie that came out recently, Americana[2025].

It’s a sort of Western broken up into little chapters. It deals with not great people all out to get a Lakota Ghost Shirt. Think of it like Pulp Fiction’s glowing briefcase if it was set in Montana or Utah. There’s a bunch of characters that are lucky to hit one note. For example, Sweeney herself is a nervous wannabe country star who stutters. She has a love interest sort of. There’s an unhinged kid and his sister, according to the synopsis. Most people die, none of it’s cathartic.

Tim has Blue Murder at St. Trinian’s(1957). It’s a weird bit of British culture as the movies are billed as based on the “drawings” of St Trinians. They’re basically comics, often single panel. The premise here is St Trinians is a school for delinquents, mostly girls. The father of one of them is a jewel thief who hides out among them in a trip to the continent. If you can believe it, this is a comedy.

Weltall has Dracula[2025]. It’s been a few years since Hollywood remade Dracula so why not throw a chance at a frenchman? So we have Luc Besson directing and “writing” and Christoph Waltz as Vlad. Pluses, you don’t have Winona Rider and Keanu Reeves affecting British accents that make Mike Myers look subtle and dignified. The downside is it’s Dracula all over again. At least you get Waltz doing the monologuing that people seem to love.
