We like to do theme episodes. Sometimes we choose them because of an actor’s passing. Sometimes a renewal of interest in a genre. This time we seem to have a theme but we couldn’t tell you why. Maybe there was a grip who worked on both of them. It’s a sort of mystery that’s outside of our pay grade.
We start with Guarding Tess(1994). Nicolas Cage is a super special United States Secret Service agent. So special he’s guarding a former first lady played by Shirley MacLaine. They have their differences and with him being button down and focused on protocol and her chafing at the rules of the USSS. Also she has brain cancer which means nothing. Which is odd when you consider that she gets kidnapped for ransom later.
We then move on to In the Line of Fire(1994). Clint Eastwood is a USSS who works in the counterfeit division. He gets a call from John Malkovich who’s planning on taking out the current president. So Clint decides he’s going back to the protection and investigation side to stop Malkovich. This is in no small part because he was on protection detail for JFK and wants some sort of redemption.
