You know why we do this? Because of all the dollar bills. That’s right, we do it for the Paycheck[2003]. What do you mean you don’t recall the John Woo film from that era outside of Mission Impossible 2? Did the performance of Ben Affleck, Uma Thurman, or Aaron Eckart not sear itself into your mind? Well listen to us dredge this corpse up and put it on the dissection table.
This is the era of Hollywood milking the estate of Phillip K Dick. Ben Affleck is the protagonist who does engineering jobs where he has his memories cooked after completion. That way he can’t sell the tech he develops to competitors. This seems fine and dandy until he does a three year job for Eckart that will be much more devastating than a holographic assistant.
Tim has Black Cadillac[2003]. It’s about two friends, Jock and Punk, who are celebrating a last night out before they go off to college. Also, Jock’s little brother is along for the ride so he can sneak a drink and get a hummer from a predatory lady in a bar. On the way home they run into Randy Quaid and a titular black Cadillac.
Weltall then has The Night Clerk[2020]. You might remember Tye Sheridan from Ready Player One. Not exactly the kind of performance that earns an Oscar. Apparently he’s still working and he got the lead in this movie. He’s a clerk at a hotel and he works at night. Also he records people secretly and pretends to interact with them so he can work past his aspergers.
