It’s been a hot minute since we’ve had a solid theme episode around Nicolas Cage. But just grabbing three movies of our patron saint is too easy. The man has a long filmography which makes it way too easy to cherry pick. So we decided to narrow things down and focus on Westerns made with Cage.
First up is Gunslingers[2025]. We start off with some atrocious CGI establishing the era and time. Three men get into a fight, one gets burnt and another gets shot. Fast forward to a town called Redemption where retired outlaws all hide out. Mr Burnface shows up looking for his brother. The dead man in the beginning was a Rockefeller and there’s quite a bounty on the brother. Cage plays a supporting character and made some choices about that.
Next up is The Old Way[2023]. Cage is a gun for hire who kills a man who tries to escape a hanging. Fast forward to years later and Cage is retired, has a wife and daughter. The boy who witnessed the killing in the beginning is now out for vengeance and kills Cage’s wife. So he and the daughter go out for re-revenge.
Lastly is Butchers Crossing[2022]. Based on a sixties novel of the same name, it’s historical fiction. The protagonist, Will, goes to the wild west looking for adventure. He connects with Miller, played by Cage, who is a veteran buffalo hunter. They go off in search of a large untapped herd of buffalo to make a fortune. Now imagine this is in a gritty western and you can probably imagine how well events occur for everybody.
