Popcorn Pulse 264: Fire Emperor

Welcome back to Manga review racing. Where we track the fastest manga reviewers. As this is the off season they’re going to talk about movies. Turning around we have something about pilots, planes, and a scowling Clint Eastwood. That’s right, a movie you’ve never heard of, Firefox(1982).

Clint Eastwood is a retired pilot who fought in Vietnam. The US Government wants to drag him back in because the Soviets have a plane. This super secret plane has a neural interface and the test pilot is the same size as Clint. Ignoring that a man who is six feet four inches almost certainly wouldn’t be a test pilot back in the eighties, he agrees. So he infiltrates the USSR to grab a plane and get it back to the US.

Tim has Stand Alone(1985). Charles Durning is a WWII vet who lives with his grandson and daughter in L.A. It’s eighties L.A. and there’s rising crime. He witnesses a hit on a random gang member in a diner. He opts to testify so the criminals put a hit out on Charles. It takes forever to get to the part where he’s killing eighties thugs with enthusiasm but it does happen.

Weltall has Emperor[2012]. It’s a movie set just after the end of the Japanese conflict in WWII. Our main guy, General Fellers, is helping decide if Hirohito should be executed. While wandering around Tokyo after the war he finds a Japanese woman, Aya, who he used to sleep with. It’s a very fictional movie where “based on true events” is used as a fig leaf to give it gravity it doesn’t really earn.
