Death Note Creator Arrested for Possessing a Knife
Death Note and Hikaru no Go creator Takeshi Obata was arrested yesterday for illegal possession of an 8.6 cm (3.4 inches) knife, according to Tokyo police. He was originally pulled over for driving his car with the headlights off at 1 a.m., and reportedly said he keeps the knife in the car for when he goes camping.

Newsweek on Youtube and Haruhi Suzumiya
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is mentioned in an article about Youtube’s overwhelming popularity with Japanese viewers. According to the article, Youtube’s 6.4 million Japanese visitors last month are cause for concern with Japanese broadcasters. Youichi Ueno, a spokesman for Fuji Television Network, says that Fuji TV has 2 employees who search Youtube for illegal content and send up to several hundred removal requests a day.

Toei Expands Online Anime Service
Building on its Anime BB and Tokusatsu Anime Archives serivices, Toei will launch Anime BB Premium, giving Japanese users access to 40 anime titles and over 1,200 episodes. Single episodes will be 100 yen each, with value packs also available. Toei expects to bring in 600 million yen from the service next year and one billion yen in 2008.

Astro Boy Phone with “Bum-Mounted Lasers”

Venus Versus Virus Anime Announced

Yurisai Event Scheduled

This past weekend, Anime Gamers celebrated the grand opning of their new store location in LA (not an additional opening, the store moved). As part of the celebration they screened some new anime, including TANK S.W.A.T. 01. According to Broccoli’s website, “It’s not our title, but Synch-Point did the translation.” (The Japanese TANK S.W.A.T. 01 DVD released in March did not include a translation).

Go Speed Racer: Waiting for Green Light

Gundam/RuroKen Seiyuu Dies
Hirotaka Suzuoki, the seiyuu (e. Japanese voice actor) for Bright Noa in the original Gundam and Saito Hajime in Rurouni Kenshin, died from lung cancer this past Sunday. He was 56. He also did voice work for Dragonball Z as Tien and Ranma 1/2 as Kuno, among other roles.

Maison Ikkoku Drama Update

Naruto Ninjafest Kicks Off
