Episode 545: Winter 2018 Previews #4

This week Anime Pulse is all about being serious, all the anime they preview this week is serious and not joking at all. That said, IRL news sees Joseph talking about work and taxes, and Andrew mentions Fire Emblem Heroes in passing before jumping into the front page and forum comments. Then in industry news we cover topics about a cafe revolving around boobies being separated by a strap, and a thought provoking bit about fan translators being arrested. Finally previews comes along with Andrew’s serious previews of a serious anime and seriously not serious anime, and Joseph’s not-sure-if-want reaction to more deadly sins.

  1. Wow…. Just wow. Lots of thoughts to unpack here. But no time. I’ll leave the first on this strap boob cafe….

Are the Japanese familiar with a pushup bra? Like it does the same thing. Seems like they don’t need a pop up store. Why not just give all the waitresses a purse to wear? I question the ability of this to survive anything but a pop-up shop with a lot of “I’ll go just for the hell of it”.
Would the Japanese freak out over a Hooters or twin peaks? Interesting thoughts.

  2. Round two, though I forgot most of what I was gonna say.

Still don’t understand this boob strap fetish…

As far as the Chinese Fansub types…. there’s a lot more to it than “Fansubs HELP the industry, those dusty old government and corporation officials need to get on board”. Japan has notoriously strict laws regarding copyright and piracy, that goes without saying, but we also have to look at where the industry is headed. Crunchyroll is here and has a DOMINANT stake in the “simulcast” or whatever you want to call it. Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and i’m sure other smaller places are producing/distributing anime/manga/games directly or making them itself. Therefore streaming/simulcast is the way the industry is headed, with near instant regional releases. This will all be done by subscription/ad driven. When there really WASNT a distribution method or official regional releases, sure fansubs may have helped to drive official sales when released. Now though, they are probably DIRECTLY affecting sales.

In addition…. Um Chinese/Japanese relations have never been…. “good” lets say. That clearly doesn’t have anything to do with their laws in general; but I am 99% sure that had something to do with their trial.

Now… About the “Fan Pulse” thing. We made it to cover a holiday gap a long long time ago. It surfaced occasionally, but would assume that it is dead as of maybe 3 years ago. I think new Joseph would have fit in. Mostly I (and occasionally) others would get hammered drunk and record for 1-2 hours. We would pick a “terrible” anime, preferably single season, and review it. We also had a lot of discussion regarding I would say… the Community of Anime. Much like your viewer questions in the Forums, but mostly it was of the “WTF is wrong with you Otaku’s” variety. Had surprisingly little to do with AP in general.

      1. We needed to use “Pulse” because that’s just how it goes. Also my suggestion of “Drunk Pulse” was denied. Which is just unfair. We all WERE fans. Just didn’t listen anymore for various reasons.

        1. Now you’re a fan again. Joseph + Andrew 4eva!
You should’ve went with “Happy Hour Pulse” or “Adult Beverage Pulse”

You still could, right? Get the team back together?
