We’ve done quite a few Nicolas Cage films so what’s a few more? The question is can we keep finding themes within his filmography as it shrinks while we review it? Can he grow his library faster than we can review it? There’s only one way to find out and that’s to press on boldly. We opted to try and find three films where Cage was a thief or a conman.
First up is Stolen[2012]. Cage plays a thief, chalk one up to the easy category. He gets caught doing a bank job and gets separated from his family. Once he gets out, he tries to reconnect with his daughter. Right before she gets kidnapped by his old heist partner and roped into one last job. Which goes as well as you might expect.
Next up is Matchstick Men[2003]. Cage plays a neurotic conman who works with Sam Rockwell. They’re partners in smallish cons like scamming elderly people out of savings. He has something of a breakdown, goes to a therapist, and decides to reconnect with a long lost daughter. Who then tries to get him to teach her the art of the con.
Last but not least is Trespass[2011]. Cage plays a jewel broker who has issues with his daughter and wife. He’s always busy with work and doesn’t spend enough time with them. Lucky for them there’s some incoming family therapy by way of thieves who take them hostage and demand the contents of his safe. Also one of the burglars has an infatuation with Cage’s wife.
