Episode 542: Winter 2018 Previews #1

It’s that time of year again, as Anime Pulse ditches the reviews and talks about the new anime of the season. Before that though Andrew and Joseph talk about their weeks, with more news on Fire Emblem Heroes and the other main jobs that both the hosts work on outside of AP. In industry news, Andrew has a depressing speech from Goku’s Japanese VA and Joseph invites the creative listeners to submit their “other word” manga ideas to be possibly picked up by a publisher. Finally the previews happen and while they are a bit more speedy, there is a total of five previews to start off. Andrew theming his around Moe Blob, and Joseph around being stuck in a video game world.

  1. Hey, everybody! It’s time for a Who Cares Nitpick!
Today’s nitpick is about Sakura in Street Fighter V. Andrew called her a new character, but she’s a “new” character. She’s been around since the Street Fighter Alpha games, so she’s a returning character.

Let’s move on to the topic that always comes around during the first month of the year: losing weight! As someone who’s “old” and stopped being a thin after I gave up exercise and gave into junk food, I have learned a lot about diet.
The biggest thing I learned is that diets don’t work. I’m not saying that some diets don’t lead to weight loss. I’m saying that diets are just a band aid. Once people succeed with a diet, they are satisfied, and lapse into old habits. So what actually works is a lifestyle change. You have to permanently replace or eliminate the worst foods from your diet, and keep your calories below 2,000. Pizza is and always will be awesome, but if anyone eats it more than once a week- especially at night- you’re not going to defeat the fat demon.

  2. Joseph’s praise of War on Geminar is just about the best reaction anyone could have for that series. I have it on my Hulu queue, still. I don’t know if they removed it from that service. I was meaning to watch more of it, even though I’m not even slightly the target audience for a harem show.

  3. I’m not sure what list Red was looking at to show previous work the voice actors from Yorimoi had done, but it was pathetic. He did not get any of the big and popular roles. I’m going to list a few. Inori Minase has voiced: Rem from Re:Zero, Chino from Is the Order a Rabbit?, Hestia from Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?. Kana Hanazawa has voiced so many but some notables are: Mikan from To-Love-Ru, Nadeko Sengoku from Monogatari series, Akane Tsunemori from Psycho Pass. Yuka Iguchi has voiced: Aoi Yukimura from Yama no Susume, Tsukihi Araragi from Monogatari series, Kurami Zell from No Game, No Life. Saori Hayami has voiced: Red’s favorite yandere Ayase Aragaki from OreImo, Miyuki Shiba from The Irregular at Magic High School, Shirayuki from Snow White with Red Hair.

  4. Watering down SCOTCH? A sweet Scotch at that? That’s….. basically ruining the alcohol….

Also since when did AP start being sponsored by Alcohol? I may have to come back to the fold…. especially if we keep watering down alcohol.

  5. Hey guys…. just a suggestion here. Don’t have time to listen to EVERY episode, though I don’t mind working a backlog when I’m out of things…. What show is this? Don’t you all do VG and Manga Pulse already?

The first 45 minutes was you two talking about Fire Emblem and Injustice 2, and the American’s TERRIBLE diet. You could trim it down to a tight 60-70 minutes if you trim that fat. Not saying it’s bad, but you have several other shows to cover these topics. Two hour shows where you don’t talk about anime for the first half scare people away no doubt.

And I zoned out during the previews mate. Keep it short, not a shot for shot description of the first episode before you review it.

And for the LOVE of Jesus please use the English names for things when you reference them. I get that you cats like the Japanese stuff, but come on man.

    That’s really all I got.

    1. Dear Paltir

Thanks for the feedback, I’ll try to cover it during the next recording . What I will say in advance is that I will take your criticism on board, please note these episodes are recorded a week in advance before being posted so it won’t be covered until next week’s post.

      Sincerely,
      Andrew

    2. Who knew Paltir was still alive? He’s like one of those ancient forces that has been long forgotten…until he is awakened.

On the opposite end of the table, I like shooting the ish and talking non-anime stuff. You devoted a segment for off topic content, so I’m more than fine with it.

  6. Not Dead yet…. Not for lack of trying on some other folk’s side though.

I totally get the off topic segments. I’ve always been a fan of a winding road to the end, rather than a straight line. Can be far more interesting topics at times. My point was that this is a recurring theme that you talk for a half hour, 45 minutes about Fire Emblem, and or some other Video Game. Not a quick anecdote or “strange shit that happened this week”, but a god honest segment about that.

Can’t say for sure anything about listenership, but an hour is a good length for a show, as it fits commute/gym time where many people listen. Would suggest either throwing that at the end so people can end that, or perhaps tag the time where you complete your Video Game discussion of the week.

I’m just some random person and stuck at home lately, so I have a little too much free time on my hands.
