Episode 612: Summer 2019 Previews #1

Last week Anime Pulse dug in deep with the Vic Mignogna news, but this week they have nothing to update us with. So if you’re here for that, you’ll be sorely disappointed. Otherwise, stick around for IRL news as Joseph talks about being a cool uncle and Andrew wants to know who your favorite foreigners in anime are. Afterwards the two get into industry news with topics like Toei animation staff being accused of sexual harassment, anime being delayed due to the author not liking the quality, and we’ve got more Akira coming in the near future. And then we leave off with the first previews show of the summer season, with Joseph failing to be a magical demon lord and Andrew turns to stone while putting out fires.

  1. W-w-w-wait! Andy, you haven’t seen Game of Thrones? I thought everyone in the UK swore a blood oath to watch every single episode! I guess you found some kind of loophole.

  2. I watched all the episodes of One Punch Man season 2 so far, and I think that the new animators proved that they were capable of delivering great action, but the mere fact that they weren’t the amazing animation team from season 1, most people lost faith.

Early on, they did a lot of tricks to avoid animating action, but they couldn’t avoid it as the season went on. They did a really good job of it. The other issue people had was in pacing. For me, someone who doesn’t have time to read every manga before I watch the anime, I don’t know what’s coming next, so I don’t get that anxiety of the plot not getting to the juicy bits. I think that it’s totally fine if OPM is not the focus of some episodes, and I was fine with the season stopping where it stopped.

The last episode had Genos and the martial arts heroes going up against this unkillable, ginormous centipede monster. This was the best action scene of the season. The second best was when Garou went up against a bunch of heroes who had him cornered. I think that anyone who gave up on OPM based on a change in aesthetics missed out- that is, if you haven’t already read the manga.
