Cyberpunk doesn’t crop up in films these days. During the nineties though, they were as numerous as the Buffalo on the US. Death Machine (1994) is one of these corpses, stuffed and mounted for generations to gawk and poke at.
It stars Wormtongue, an actress from Lawnmower Man 2: Death of the Franchise, two guys with bit parts from the Fifth Element, the brother who dies first in Die Hard and Commander Porkins. Wormtongue unleashes the titular Death Machine when he gets fired by the CEO while demanding his job back. The only solution they come up with is to stuff a random terrorist into a cyborg suit and make him fight the killer alien robot. Continue reading “Popcorn Pulse 31: Wormtongue”

No Ichigo? No TC? What’s a poor RedUnit to do!? (Mess up the episode number, that’s what!) Well if your as witty, intelligent, and handsome as him you’ll have no trouble finding a guest host to be your wing man. That’s right, this episode we have the angriest of thinkers, TheMadPhilosopher, as our first ever official guest host. After a brief introduction to our guest, it’s onto the show! First up is news, with articles like Sugar Diamonds for your lucky lady, festivals in Japan still going despite the risk of a third eye, and Hawaiian Pancakes at Japanese McDonalds are doing rather well. Then it’s into the discussion thread for this week, as the question of what giant mech/robot/suit would you like to pilot? And finally the reviews. MadPhilosopher starts us out with a review of .hack//Sign, where 2002 thought 1990 thought 2005 would be like. Time humor! And Red wraps things up by describing his first venture into the world of Yaoi with Love Stage; he will never be the same man again.

Ever have one of those shows where you started three times over, finally think you’ve solved the problems, only to find out as you are editing the show that everything went horribly wrong? Yeah, this is that kind of show. TC talked about seriously buying a new microphone to upgrade his old equipment handed down by Ichigo, and Red thinks thats’s a really good idea, like, today. Alas, dear listeners, you will need to put up with this terrible quality for this weeksshow. After a brief talk about the passing of Leonard Nimoy, TC and Red jump into news with talks about body pillows that don’t like to be touched, McDonalds Japan trying to be more like a Starbucks, and tropes that even female anime watchers are sick and tired of. Then Red ushers in the discussion thread, bringing up the question of what makes an anime an anime? And finally it’s into reviews. Red kicks it off with the fujoshi bait Black Butler – Book of Circus, and TC with Wife bring up the rear with the not-so-virgin Maria the Virgin Witch.

Finally, a show that focuses on the manga. You’d almost think we’ve done one of these once in awhile or something. Through the magic of circumstance we both managed to do some slice of life mangas at the same time. Considering how dull they usually are, it’s nothing short of a miracle if we generated some entertainment from them.
Tim talks about Saikyou Densetsu Kurosawa. It’s a slice of life about a socially awkward construction worker who wants desperately to be popular. He decides that he will find way, in his simple and methodical way, to win the hearts and minds of his coworkers. Being socially inept, he fails multiple times. And while the story isn’t as excruciating as some it only earns a borders.
Weltall then discusses Cheese in the Trap, a manwha. Like the lives of some people we must all know, at some point, it goes nowhere and does nothing. Sort of like a fat pigeon glued to a manhole cover. It’s about a girl who resents a boy for reasons the author doesn’t want to elaborate upon. Without any character growth or substance to speak of, it too earned itself a borders.

Hello everyone, this week the doctor of time, TC, has fallen ill once again and will be taking sick leave until further notice. However this does not mean you’ll have to put up with Red’s drunk behavior, well, you still have to put up with that but he’s at least not alone. The man behind AP, Ichigo, is back to deliver you some news and reviews. Red and Ichigo start off the show filling you in on udon for your dog, the top ten manga they’ve never heard of that others want animated, and sakura petals in your beer. Then it’s onto the discussion thread, were the question of visual novels came up. Have you ever played one before? And finally it’s more reviews, as Red takes many showers after watchingBlack Bullet and Ichigo pets adorably cute animal girls in Dog Days”.
