Episode 539: Top Ten of 2017

Bit of a different show this time around as Joseph and Andrew go over their top 10 anime of 2017, some they have finished and others they have not. But first we got IRL news about Fire Emblem Heroes, terrible manga to anime transitions, and forum topics. There’s also the industry news, with yet two more top 10, these ones about cute twins and the top 10 anime according to Anikore.

And that’s it folks, that’s the final episode of 2017. (Technically)

  1. To correct Joe, I am not in the US. I’m actually across the Pond in the UK (Fellow Scotsman of Eastern descent similar to Andrew). Although Joe is on the money with regards to some of the horrific things in the world.

  2. The history of AP begins with many hosts, not 2, or even 3. I don’t know if any listeners are still active from those days, so I l think there’s only 3 people you could get a better history from than I.

I started at the tail end of the first AP saga. It was like a reverse Dragonball order. First there were the Z Fighters, then there was this buddy duo, reviewing Naruto and Bleach in like every episode.

I don’t get the big deal of the Shokugeki no Soma reveal. I get that it’s a big deal for Erina, and it’s cool that she had Soma under her nose the whole time, but we already know about his dad. I would’ve cared more if we knew less about Soma’s dad. I can’t imagine that this was so dramatically different in the manga, but I’m obviously wrong.

After hearing your top 10’s, I think it’s safe to assume that Anime Pulse is the number one representative of harem anime. I cannot imagine any other podcast or anime website putting so many harems (or even romantic comedies) in a list representing an entire year.

    1. Actually Yotaru, the show began with three people. There were others who would occasionally come on, but it was three. Chigo, Ichigo, and Batou. But since Chigo decided to abandon the show, we don’t speak of him. Thus, the show officially began with Ichigo and Batou.

No, that’d just be me. I’m the harem guy.

        1. Rukia, but she went away pretty fast… like in a couple episodes.

And Rangiku was the “East Coast Correspondence” but since I’m on the East Coast, it’s kind of a moot point. I mean, there was also a dog at one time.

  3. You made a top 10 without having watched/finished Houseki no Kuni or made in Abyss!? Noooooo! I’m sure that’s a mortal sin in some religion somewhere. xD
Even so, it was pretty interesting hearing what someone’s top 10 would look like if you removed those two generally beloved shows from the running. Having looked at several top 5’s and top 10’s for 2017 they seem to show up in almost all of them (including my own).
That aside I enjoyed your little talk about Shokugeki no Souma early in the episode. Like I’ve said before I really like those kind of anime-related discussions.

Anyway, befitting the theme of this episode I’m gonna share my top 5. For comparison or whatever people want to make out of it.

    1. Made in Abyss
    2. Houseki no Kuni (Land of the Lustrous)
    3. KADO: The right answer
    4. Kuzu no Honkai (Scum’s Wish)
    5. Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou (Girl’s Last Tour)

Looking forward to a new year of (hopefully) good shows and entertaining podcasts!

    1. I’ll ask you: Where’s Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinju season 2 on your top list? I think that any anime list that doesn’t have that on it is incomplete.
I liked Kado: The Right Answer a lot, but it just couldn’t stick the landing. I felt like it didn’t need to go in the direction it did.
