Japanese Anti-Piracy Law Receives Backlash
On the KickVic advocates:
It’s just as well I missed this episode’s livestream, because I think I would have insisted on being contrary. The subject discusssed is something I happen to be following in my spare time. Anime-Gate.
It’s funny: The Gizmodo/IO9 article that was referenced in the comments to the prior episode is the second hit piece written by yet another person from Channel Awesome, Beth Elderkin, and indicates yet more collusion between the person going by the handle Marzgurl (Kaylyn Saucedo) and ANN writer Lynzee Loveridge who wrote the first hit-piece for that site. This was all an effort launched just the very day after the DBZ Brolly movie premiered in North America, by a “funny coincidence”. That they had to resort to lies and distortions to try to make their cases in their articles and social media communications, indicates their desire to unjustly smear someone’s reputation.
The point is that there is strong evidence of a legal conspiracy by these people to misrepresent their own positions as wholly impartial when they are actually colluding to publicly destroy a targeted VA artist, Vic Mignogna, via the social media mobs — with NO EVIDENCE whatsoever except fairly questionable heresay and falsified “evidence”. That several prominent VA personalities have glommed onto this campaign to throw Vic under the bus — right when Vic’s star was back on the rise again folllowing a very successful dub — is not only suspect, but reflects an industry rife with prima-donnas, hypocrites and liars — and I am not talking about Vic.
What we do know is that our judicial system is predicated on the principle of presuming Innocence until _proven_ guilty. It is a principle by which we _all_ benefit. As such, unless and until a bonafide court of law brings a civil or criminal sentence against the accused, following a thorough, proper trial, we ALL have to accept that he is INNOCENT. I understand the sentiment to want to be accepting of victims and to give prospective victims the benefit of a doubt, but unless or until one of them actually brings actual legal charges against Vic in an _actual_ court of law, rather than via innuendo and public smearing from the shadows, then I am sorry but they will have to live with the consequences of their inaction. That is the way the system is supposed to work.
Consequently, Vic has now lawyered up, because the defamation he has suffered under this mob-rule court of opinion insanity via the social media networks has exposed both Funimation, Rooster Teeth, Sony, several anime conventions and many individuals to liability. The lack of professionalism by so many people in the VA industry not for ending their contracts with Vic but for subsequently colluding to utterly destroy his career altogether, was wholly unnecessary and utterly foolish. Several people are now facing serious charges of Tortious Interference and Legal Conspiracy to interfere with Vic’s current and prospective business, his career and his ability to make a living. In particular, Marzgurl and her cohorts are facing charges for the negligent sharing of _unverifiable_ statements to cause damage, among many other serious charges.
Rooster Teeth and Funimation, as well as their respective parent corporations, have now exposed themselves to litigation that might well prove potentially very damaging. And all because they foolishly made public statements that no sane or properly shepherded business would have ever allowed. Their best interests now are to settle with Vic and to make matters right with he and them. And this means disavowing the foolish statements by so many of their other employees and associates. The consequences of actually trying to fight this and losing are such that either of these companies could be forced to shut their doors as their owners cut their financial and public relations losses. Whether the companies fight or settle, I dare say some of these Twitter-happy VA personalities might find themselves cut loose and left to their own legal devices by their presumed employers.
So a word to the wise, that _most_ businesses have long figured out: when an employee’s job is terminated, for whatever the reason, NO ONE talks about it EVER. Especially in an “at-will” state, like Texas, where termination can happen with no reason necessary. This was all very foolish and stupid and unnecessary.
So since you are our European expert (Joey could be well versed in European culture. I dunno) what is the etiquette for giving a friendly kiss to a female? In America, people have to be a bit familiar with one another before they give a peck in the cheek. It’s odd that a hug seems less personal than a friendly kiss.
I’d say it has more to do with the individual country and culture and times. I do not doubt things have changed quite alot since I used to travel frequently to foreign countries (Let’s just say that 9-11 put an end to that). But when I did there were certain places, Sao Paulo and Milan, in particular, where the females greeted me socially with a kiss. And often this was not a simple peck, but a full-on mouth-to-mouth kiss — often including tongue. I was a happily married man at the time, and given my rather conservative nature, I was fairly surprised and unsure of what to actually make of this. But they seemed to all take it in stride, and treated it all very matter-of-factly, so I just passed it off as just a cultural difference, trying not to read anything into it. I would expect, however, that someone actually dating in said culture would likely be quite confused. I know I would.
But the cultural environment has changed quite dramatically even in the last five years, so your mileage will likely also vary.
